The Department of Trade and Industry of Zambales held its 2nd series of Business Councillors Capacity Development Training Program on May 21, 2021, via Zoom. The training aims to remind the participants of the importance of business councilors in providing service to their clients, especially in terms of effectively communicating with them. Filipino motivational speaker Pocholo “The VoiceMaster” Gonzales was the main speaker of the program, who talked about effective public speaking.
At the start of his talk, Pocholo shared that due to the pandemic, public speaking is already considered dead and it is the new normal that provides authentic and creative communication. He relates this to voice artistry explaining that in the future, all will be online-based and voice artistry will be the only remaining human element in technology. “You cannot duplicate human feelings and emotions,” he added.
In his presentation, The Power of Excellent Communication Skills, Pocholo talked about how great people C.A.N.
He shared that his goal in the training is to make everyone unlearn what they initially knew as public speaking and learn the new version of communication in the new normal. He also talked about his communication framework, the Wilbur Schramm model, which he believes is the most effective communication model as it focused on the commonality of the sender and receiver.
Pocholo then transitioned to talk about what he does aside from being a motivational and public speaker. He amazed the audience with his voice-acting prowess by doing several voice impressions of cartoon characters, famous celebrities, and personalities. As a storyteller, it is his responsibility to catch the attention of the audience and keep it as long as he is still on the stage. He has also trained celebrities and politicians on voice and public speaking.
At the heart of his presentation, Pocholo defined communication as the act of transferring information from one place to another. He also discussed the 4 essential communication skills: Nonverbal, Thinking, Listening, and Speaking. According to a 2018 survey by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), verbal communication skills are ranked first among a job candidate’s ‘must-have’ skills and qualities. He accentuates the difference among the stated 4 communication skills and their importance in building connections with other people. “Connecting increases your influence in every situation,” he added.
Pocholo also discussed the 12 ways to instantly improve communication skills:
1. Show respect and appreciation
2. Listen Actively
3. Ask questions and paraphrase
4. Make eye contact
5. Pay attention to body language
6. Cut conversation fillers
7. Be brief but specific
8. Put away devices
9. Validate others thoughts and feelings
10. Never talk over people
11. Watch your tone
12. Smile and have a positive attitude
The VoiceMaster then ended the virtual training with two inspiring and impactful quotes, “Our voice is the greatest gift from God. How we use it is our greatest gift back to God,” and “Availability is the best Ability” where he accentuates the importance of the audiences’ presence in the success of the event.
