On April 19, JCI Makati joined the national launch of Beyond Prison Walls, hosted by JCI Caballero at the Batangas City Jail. Beyond Prison Walls is one of JCI Philippines’ flagship projects, which aims to help the correctional community (or people behind bars) in their total human development based on the principles of a balanced and restorative justice.
The launch of the program was also graced with the presence of the JCI Philippines National Board, headed by JCIP President Rix Rafols. Together with him are National PJ Estrellado, National Treasurer Disston Tan, and Beyond Prison Walls National Chairman Ian Esta. It was also fortunate that JCI Vice President for Asia & the Pacific Rochelle Borton was present in the event.
The beneficiaries of JCI’s visit were over 50 female inmates, who gathered in the hall for a short program. They were welcomed by JCI Caballero President Zester Hernandez, who also introduced the rest of the JCI members present. JCI Makati President, Filipino motivational speaker Pocholo “The VoiceMaster” Gonzales took the stage to entertain the audience. Pres. Choy made the crowd roar with laughter as he did various voice impressions of famous personalities, both dead and alive!
The entertainment continued as it was the inmates’ turn to perform for their visitors. One group presented a dance number, while another group performed a song. It was followed by JCI’s presentation of their donation – boxes of sanitary items and other female essentials that they could use.
The program closed with some inspirational words from Pres. Rix and Ms. Borton.
Beyond Prison Walls is a JCIP project geared towards the fulfillment of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal number 16: To promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institution at all levels.
